When you have to wait for it — but it’s worth the wait.
That’s the case for the Class 6A boys and 5A/6A girls state wrestling tournaments, which — after a one-day delay forced by the late-February snowstorm that blanketed the area — kick off on Saturday, Feb. 24, and conclude on Sunday, Feb. 25, at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
Here’s what the schedules for those two tournaments look like.
Class 5A/6A girls: First round — 9 a.m. to 12:36 p.m. Saturday. Consolation — 12:44 p.m. to 2:36 p.m. Saturday. Semifinals — 6:04 p.m. to 6:52 p.m. Saturday.
Consolation semifinals — 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Sunday. Third-place and championship matches — 11 a.m. to 1:02 p.m. Sunday.
Class 6A boys: First round — 9 a.m. to 11:24 a.m. Saturday. Second round —11:24 a.m. to 1:56 p.m. Saturday. Consolation — 1:56 p.m. to 4:04 p.m. Saturday. Quarterfinals — 4:04 p.m. to 5:56 p.m. Saturday. Consolation second round — 4:12 p.m. to 5:56 p.m. Saturday. Consolation third round — 6:04 p.m. to 7:16 p.m. Saturday. Semifinals — 7:16 p.m. to 9:24 p.m. Saturday. Consolation fourth round — 7:16 p.m. to 9:24 p.m. Saturday.
Consolation semifinals — 9 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. Sunday. Fifth-place matches — 11 a.m. to 1:02 p.m. Sunday. Third-place matches — 11 a.m. to 1:02 p.m. Sunday. Championship matches — 11 a.m. to 1:02 p.m. Sunday.
Here’s a look at which wrestlers from West Linn were seeded at state and what some of them had to say about the upcoming tournament.
Class 5A/6A girls: 155 pounds — No. 1 Destiny Rodriguez, 12, West Linn.
“I definitely want to be a four-time state champ for West Linn,” Rodriguez said. “And I just found this out — I’ll be the first official girls four-time state champ (for) Oregon. That’d be amazing.”
Class 6A boys: 113 pounds — No. 3 Colby Cook, 11, West Linn; 126 pounds — No. 3 Oscar Doces, 10, West Linn; 138 pounds — No. 4 Joshua Abarca, 12, West Linn.
“We’re ready for state. We’ve been ready,” Doces said. “We have a lot of hard practices. (Coach Kevin) Keeney does a good job of getting us ready. I’m just going to do my best and keep wrestling.”
145 pounds — No. 2 Charles Spinning, 11, West Linn. 152 pounds — No. 1 Henry Dillingham, 11, West Linn. 160 pounds — No. 8 Lucas Gray, 10, West Linn.
182 pounds — No. 1 Justin Rademacher, 12, West Linn.195 pounds — No. 2 Benjamin Winjum, 12, West Linn. 220 pounds — No. 3 Earl Ingle, 12, West Linn.
“Our team, we’ve just been growing a lot, getting better every single day and I’m super happy with where we are right now,” Winjum said. “Newberg is our big competition, I think, this state tournament and I think we have what it takes to beat them.”
Also headed to state from Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and West Linn are: 106 pounds — Ryan Muzii, 10, West Linn; 120 pounds — Nate Gusdorf, 10, West Linn; 126 pounds — Maclain Culp, 9, West Linn; 132 pounds — Nolan Opferman, 11, Lakeridge; 145 pounds — George Kovchegov, 11, West Linn; 170 pounds — Donathan Lewis, 12, West Linn; 195 pounds — Lusiano Lopez, 10, Lake Oswego; 220 pounds — Liam Armstrong, 12, West Linn; 285 pounds — William Dolan, 12, Lake Oswego.
