The Oregon commit wins the award for a second straight year.
Gatorade today announced today (Wednesday, March 15) that Jackson Shelstad of West Linn High School is the 2022-23 Gatorade Oregon Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Shelstad is the second Gatorade Oregon Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from West Linn High School.
The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the court, distinguishes Shelstad as Oregon’s best high school boys basketball player. Shelstad joins an elite alumni association of state award-winners in 12 sports.
The state’s returning Gatorade Player of the Year, the 6-foot, 170-pound senior guard had led the Lions to a 28-1 record and a berth in the Class 6A state championship in 2022-23. Shelstad averaged 28.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.9 steals per game, connecting on 41.7 percent of his 3-pointers (78 of 187) through 28 games. Named to the Team USA roster for the Nike Hoop Summit in April, he’s a three-time Three Rivers League Player of the Year and ranks as the nation’s No. 36 recruit in the Class of 2023 by ESPN.com.
Off the court, Shelstad has volunteered locally as part of multiple fundraising campaigns to benefit children’s cancer research. He has also donated his time as a youth basketball coach and counselor.
“When it comes to playing the game the right way and being an impact player, Shelstad is one of the best in the country,” said Paul Biancardi, National Recruiting Director for ESPN. “He’s a big-time scoring point guard while also being floor general. He reminds me of former West Linn great and NBA player Payton Pritchard in terms of being both a knock-down shooter who loves a challenge and has high-level competitive spirit. He’s led his team to a national spotlight in the ESPN 25 team rankings.”
Shelstad has also maintained a 3.30 GPA in the classroom. He has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Oregon this fall.
