The Pacers were the TRL’s best a year ago, plan to do it again in ’22.
The Lakeridge girls cross country team just about did it all in 2021.
The Pacers stepped up to win their second straight Three Rivers League district championship, then came back to notch a 12th-place finish at the Class 6A state meet.
Now, with three top-16 finishers back from the ‘21 TRL district meet, they are ready to give the rest of the TRL their best shot again.
“After winning back-to-back TRL titles, … (the) girls are striving to improve and qualify for the state championship again this fall,” said Lakeridge coach Scott Spear, who’s now in his 10th years as Pacers’ head coach.
The 2022 version of the Pacers will be led by: junior Breckyn Kornachuck (she was fourth at district a year ago and 38th at the Class 6A state meet); junior Olivia Smith (she was 13th at district a year ago and 83rd at state); junior Megan Larson (she was 16th at district a year ago and 85th at state); and sophomore Sigrid Brakenhielm (she was seventh in the TRL 800 meters as a freshman).
Also back with varsity experience are sophomore Rachel Fleck, junior Natalie Cartwright and junior Eliza Appleyard, while the team welcomes two newcomers in sophomore Alexis Gonzalez and freshman Grace Houlihan.
“We believe we are one of the favorites to win the TRL, but the league has so much talent,” Spear said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if the TRL earned a couple at large bids (to state) this fall.”
