LO brings back four players from last year’s TRL champ and fourth-place state finisher.
Team: Lake Oswego girls golf
Coach: Danica Buttkus
Team Leaders: Senior Cierra Ferguson (she was sixth at the 2022 Three Rivers League district tournament and 19th at the Class 6A state tournament), senior Berkeley Ward (ninth at district and 30th at state), sophomore Ansley Kang (10th at district and 34th at state) and sophomore Olivia Mygrant (12th at district and 30th at state), along with freshman Hailey Lim (she shot 77 in the ‘23 TRL opener), freshman Alexis Zou (she shot 85 in this year’s TRL opener), sophomore Kate Kochatavr and freshman Kennedy Hottel.
“Berkeley Ward and Cierra Ferguson both have years of experience and are competitive players,” said Lake Oswego’s first-year coach Danica Buttkus. “Berkeley can drive the ball with precision and Cierra has a strong short game.”
As for Kang and Mygrant, Buttkus said that “both take the game of golf seriously and put in the practice time in and offseason,” while Lim and Zou “are both very consistent and I expect them to hold their own … this season. Hailey is consistent all-around and will be a force to reckon with.”
League Race: Buttkus said she expects her team — which won the TRL district crown a year ago and placed fourth at state — has a great chance to repeat that success in 2023. But she added that West Linn and Lakeridge should challenge throughout the TRL regular season.
“I believe (we have) a great shot at defending the title as Three Rivers League champs,” she said. “We have a young team that is committed and very talented. Our focus this season will be continuing to shoot low scores by following our team motto ‘GBED,’ which stands for ‘Get better every day.’”
