Dancers make their marks
It’s not just the teams on the field that have been working hard this year.
Sure, sure, the football teams at Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and West Linn are great.
But the football players aren’t the only ones out there working hard and improving and performing.
The dance teams and cheerleaders at those three schools have been showing off their skills in the first weeks of the 2022 high school fall sports season, too. So here’s a collection of the best images from those teams’ early-season efforts.

Basketball: OSAA board votes to adopt shot clock
Starting in 2023-24, Oregon varsity teams will play with a 35-second shot clock
After years of debate, the shot clock finally is coming to Oregon high school basketball.
The rule change came up for vote Monday, Sept. 12, by the OSAA executive board, which approved the use of a 35-second shot clock for varsity games starting with the 2023-24 season.
The unanimous vote in favor of the shot clock is seen as a victory by most coaches. In an Oregon Basketball Coaches Association survey, 220 favored the shot clock, 48 were against it and 28 had no preference.

Lakeridge boys polo will be strong again
The Pacers have appeared in the past four state championship games.
The Lakeridge boys water polo team has grown into one of the state’s best in recent years.
Indeed, the Pacers have appeared in the last four straight state championship games, winning the Oregon High School Water Polo championship in 2019 and finishing second to crosstown rival Lake Oswego a year ago.
While the Three Rivers League remains as tough as ever — Lake Oswego went unbeaten a year ago and the TRL also includes perennial power Newberg — the Pacers believe they have the ability compete with those other top teams.

West Linn volleyball battles past Lakeridge 3-1
The Lions drop the third set, come back with their best performance in the fourth.
It’s never easy to follow up on a championship season.
West Linn, which won the 2021 Class 6A state title, knows that as well as anyone.
The Lions got another lesson in that arena on Monday, Sept. 12, when they battled past Lakeridge 25-16, 25-20, 24-26, 25-15 at West Linn High School.

Lake Oswego football shuts out West Salem 14-0
The Laker ‘D’ holds the Titans to just over 200 yards total.
It wasn’t all pretty and it sure wasn’t easy, but the Lake Oswego football team made sure that its Friday, Sept. 9, contest turned into a win.
The Lakers, playing at West Salem High School in Week 2 of the 2022 fall season, managed one touchdown in each half against the Titans and threw a shutout to win 14-0.

Lakeridge girls soccer beats David Douglas 2-0
The Pacers dominate the Scots throughout and improve to 2-0 on the season.
The scoreboard said one thing.
Lakeridge girls soccer 2, David Douglas 0.
But the play on the field — at Lakeridge High School on Tuesday, Sept. 13 — said much, much more. The Pacers dominated from start to finish, controlled possession throughout and outshot the Scots 15-5, with David Douglas managing just two of those shots before the final five minutes.

The football teams from Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and West Linn high schools battled the best in Week 2 of the 2022 season.
Lake Oswego won its second straight game by beating West Salem 14-0 on Friday, Sept. 9, while Lakeridge and West Linn both dropped hard-fought decisions to big-time opponents, with Lakeridge falling to Jesuit 35-6 on Friday, Sept. 9, and West Linn dropping a 35-31 decision to Sheldon on Thursday, Sept. 8.

As it turns out, reports concerning the death of the West Linn football team were greatly exaggerated.
The Lions — a week after a painful Week 2 home loss to Sheldon — showed there was plenty of life left in them, coming back to beat perennial power Jesuit 31-20 at Jesuit High School on Thursday, Sept. 15.

Sign-ups open for Lady Lions Fall Youth Hoop League
The West Linn girls basketball program is currently accepting sign-ups for the Lady Lions Fall Youth Hoop League.
The league is open to West Linn girls in grades 2-8 and will provide an opportunity for players to tune up their basketball skills before the winter season. Each hour-long session will be supervised by members of the West Linn girls basketball coaching staff and will consist primarily of games, complemented with developmental skills.
