My website is unique in this world — but I need you to subscribe to make it work.
Hi all: You may not know it, but I hit a big milestone today.
Wedding anniversary? Nope. I hit 30 last spring — which was great — but it’s not that one.
Birthday? Nope. I hit 61 a couple weeks back — always great not to be dead — but it’s not that one.
In this case, it’s a work milestone. While I’ve only been working as owner and primary contributor to Miles Vance Sports Journal for a little more than six months (since Aug. 24, 2022), the milestone is this — this story marks the 500th original post I’ve made to MVSJ.
Every one of those posts — team previews, game stories, features, slideshows, the Photo of the Day, the Play of the Day, the ICYMI Monday post, weekly stats, opinion columns and more — has been focused on the teams and athletes at Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and West Linn high schools. And because of that focus, there’s nothing in the world like MVSJ.
Along the way, I’ve written previews of every varsity team in the first two seasons of the year at those three schools. I’ve covered every football game played by the Lions, Lakers and Pacers. I’ve written features, sidebars and opinion columns.
I’ve posted slideshows that included nearly 5,000 images of your favorite Lakeridge, West Linn and Lake Oswego athletes, not to mention their coaches, fans, cheerleaders and dance teams. I’ve made those same images, and many more, available to everyone (including digital downloads, prints and more) at milesvance.smugmug.com.
Most importantly to me, I’ve talked to the athletes from these three schools — lots and lots of them. I’ve talked to them after their greatest triumphs and honored them for their successes. I’ve talked to them after their most painful losses and allowed them to share their feelings in those places of hurt.
But notably — and I’ve always described this as the trait that separates me from the animals (other sports reporters) — I’ve talked to them. Lots and lots of them. Hundreds of them. Always. After every game. After wins and after losses and — thanks to soccer — after ties.
Because I believe in this product, I’ve invested thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to make it work. And because the post-pandemic world of high school sports journalism is far different than the one that preceded it, Miles Vance Sports Journal is the only place that the teams and athletes at Lake Oswego, Lakeridge and West Linn will get the attention they deserve.

Thanks, and here’s to the next 500.
